     Smooth or “bald” tires are not only dangerous; they’re illegal in many states.  Surprised?  It’s because the tires lose their grip on the road, especially in adverse conditions, such as wet weather. 

     Put a penny into the tire tread, with the head of Abraham Lincoln down.  If you can see all of his head, get a new tire.
