Lesson R&S 89
FDA Teaches Kids Nutrition
Nutrition experts and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advocate teaching children to read food labels themselves to find healthy food, because “parents are not doing a bang-up job” doing it. The FDA joined up with the Cartoon Network (see website) to encourage kids ages 9 to 13 to consider the calories, serving size, and nutrients.
Fifth-grader Marie said, “Reading the labels was a bit confusing at first, but I got used to it.”
“I don’t think it’s unrealistic,” said a mother of a 9-year-old son.
