     Last week when I was in Seattle, I tried to make a long-distance call to my family.  I dialed 1 + area code + number.  To my surprise, I heard “beep, beep, beep,” and “Sorry, this phone has been disconnected.”  I was worried, so I asked the operator to contact a repairman.
